This prickly creature gave sleepless night to a family in Pattom

Roshni, Catching porcupine

Thiruvananthapuram: A porcupine entered a house at midnight giving a sleepless night for the entire family in Pattom. The officials from the forest department arrived in the morning and caught the porcupine.

Mathew Sakariya and his family woke up by 2.30 am, after hearing the unusual barking of their pet dog. Though Mathew and his son went out and searched all around the house with a torch, they could not find anything. However, the dogs did not stop barking.

The porcupine was spotted later when they again looked outside through the window. The huge porcupine was found pacing by spreading its sharp quills on the veranda. When they opened the door, the porcupine began to roam around the yard and spread panic among the family.

Though the dogs were released from the kennel, it stood helpless. One of the dogs was attacked by the porcupine and a quill got stuck on its body. Somehow, the family shooed it to a nearby shed of the house at around 6 am.

After passing information to the Palode range office, the officials arrived at Mathew’s house by 7.30 am. The porcupine was caught by a team led by beat forest officer Roshni and was released into Peppara forest.

The forest officials inferred that the porcupine had come from the forest region near the LIC office. It reached the premises of Mathew’s house by burrowing from the gate.
