Tanur: Fishermen who took part in the rescue operation said they were injured while participating in the rescue mission.
Asilu, a local fisherman, said that he and others took the risk of breaking the glass windows of the boat to help passengers escape. However, they suffered injuries to their hands and arms while doing so. "We didn't have any equipment, and there was no visibility," he said. "We had no choice but to use our own hands to help people." Asilu, who fractured his hand, is now receiving treatment at a hospital in Kottakkal.
The locals also pointed out that it was a group of young people spending time on the riverbank who first alerted them about the accident.
According to Abdul Rahman, a Tirur native who joined the rescue efforts, the boat carried more passengers than its capacity. He and several locals rushed to the site in their small fishing boats after hearing about the incident. By the time they arrived, the capsized boat was already sinking. Despite poor visibility, they managed to rescue many passengers, while others brought light equipment to help rescue those still trapped inside the boat.
22 people drowned as the watercraft sank in the Poorappuzha estuary here on Sunday night. As many as 10 others were injured also in the mishap.
