Tanur: Youth League, the youth wing of the Indian Union Muslim League, has come out against the judicial commission appointed by the state government to probe the Tanur boat accident. League alleged that the commission chairman Justice VK Mohanan has a close affinity to CPM and acts as a party worker.

Youth League General Secretary PK Firoz alleged that a probe led by VK Mohanan would not be neutral due to his association with the ruling Left front.

"During the previous tenures of Left governments, Justice VK Mohanan was nominated to various posts. He led the team assigned by the government as part of a judicial probe declared against the central agencies investigating the gold smuggling case. It seems the government constituted a commission to save the accused and those linked to them in the case," he said.

He also criticised the Sports minister and Tanur MLA V Abdurahiman and alleged that the state cabinet ministers failed to heed the warning of locals and had a role to play in the boat tragedy.

He claimed that boats, initially stopped by the police in Tanur, were issued permission to resume their services after the intervention of Abdurahiman, Tourism Minister Muhammed Riyas and Ports Minister Ahammad Devarkovil.

"The locals have revealed that 'Atlantic' boat owner Nasser held leisure events along with Tanur DySP and ministers. Therefore, a probe by such a judicial commission and officer would only serve to help those linked to the incident," he said.

Meanwhile, Abdurahiman said that the state government views the probe seriously. He claimed that a fair investigation is ongoing to nab the culprits behind the incident.
