Kollam: A major disaster was averted on Saturday after a tanker truck, which collided with a car and overturned in Kollam, was emptied to prevent fuel spillage. The incident took place around 8.30 pm on MC Road in Vayakkal, Kollam. The truck was reportedly lifted and emptied later following prolonged efforts by various fire brigade units, police and the locals.
Within a few hours of the accident, all the people within one kilometre radius were evacuated from the area. Following which, an emergency rescue vehicle was brought from the IOC plant in Parippally and the fuel (petroleum) was transferred to another vehicle in eight hours. Subsequently, traffic was restored in the area.
As per reports, the accident took place after the truck driver applied sudden brakes on seeing a car in a curve. The negligence of the car driver caused the accident, eye witnesses said.
Meanwhile, the car driver who sustained severe injuries has been admitted to Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram.
