Cumbam: Efforts have begun to dart the rogue rice-eating tusker ‘Arikomban’, which has been terrorising the residents of Cumbum Town in Tamil Nadu. At present, the elephant has been spotted near Surulipatti region and a darting team from Coimbatore has arrived here. Two ‘kumki’ elephants, Swayambhu and Muthu, have also been brought to aid the mission.
Arikomban, which created a commotion in Cumbum on Saturday morning, continued rampaging the town during night too. However, the location of the jumbo could not be traced by Sunday morning due to the disruption of radio collar signals. Around 6.30 am, Arikomban’s presence was confirmed in the Surulipatti region.
The Tamil Nadu Forest Department on Saturday issued an order to tranquilise Arikomban after the elephant entered Cumbum Town, damaged more than five vehicles and injured one person. The trunk of the jumbo also got hurt while attempting to destroy a barbed wire fence. It is currently being monitored by a team comprising a veterinary surgeon. Curfew has been declared in Cumbum till May 30.
Arikomban, which posed a threat to the residents of Chinnakanal in Idukki, was translocated to Periyar Tiger Reserve on April 29. Following which, the jumbo went on roaming around various regions including Megamalai in Tamil Nadu.
