Kochi: An emergency synod of the Syro-Malabar Church, presided over by Cardinal George Alencherry, will take place on Friday.
The meeting is scheduled to take place at a time when a group of priests are affirming their stance against the cardinal. The synod was originally scheduled to take place in August. The synod grants new responsibilities to expelled auxiliary bishops.
The meeting will discuss the situation where priests came out with public criticism. The synod may witness demands seeking action against dissenting priests. Bishop Jacob Manathodath, who is in Rome, will not take part in the synod. Bishop Jacob Manathodath, who stepped down from the apostolic administrator post will return to Kerala only on July 7. He is a member of the five-member permanent synod.
The sidelining of auxiliary bishops from Ernakulam-Angamaly archdiocese had irked the dissenting priests. A meeting attended by around 250 dissenting priests had demanded the removal of George Alencherry from cardinal post. Meanwhile, priests supporting the cardinal has sought action against the dissenting priests.
The dissenting members claim to have the support of over 350 priests. They want action to be taken against all the dissenting members rather than a few.
