Kochi: The Syro-Malabar Church on Sunday refuted the statement of former spokesperson of the Syro-Malabar Church Father Paul Thelakkat that there is no evidence to prove the visit of St Thomas to India.
The statement issued by Cuira Bishop Mar Sebastian Vaniyapurackal says that Fr. Thelakkat's arguments are not based on facts.
The Syro-Malabar Church's official stand is that St. Thomas visited India. Many world famous historians have said that the visit of St. Thomas to India is a fact. There are many historical documents which support this. We agree that a small section of historians may have disagreement over this, the statement says.
Bishop Geevarghese Mor Coorilos of the Niranam diocese of the Jacobite Syrian Church had said the other day that the "myth that St. Thomas converted Brahmins to Christianity should be shattered."
Later, Fr. Thelakkat said in a discussion in connection with the Bishop Geevarghese's statement that St. Thomas did not visited India.
