Thiruvananthapuram: Even as gold smuggling case accused Swapna Suresh continues to reiterate her allegations, CPM is refraining from taking legal action against her. In addition to levelling personal allegations against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and his family, Swapna has also challenged the leader to face her legally.

However, none other than party state secretary MV Govindan announced about taking legal action against her. Normally, whenever an allegation is raised against the party or the government, CPM declares to face the issue politically and legally.

Yet, the party chose to stay silent over Swapna’s allegations at a time when cases are registered against those posting against the chief minister on social media.

Initially, the government had attempted to defend against Swapna’s allegations by registering a conspiracy case. Even then, none of the people who faced the allegations were ready to lodge complaints. It was KT Jaleel MLA who lodged complaint in case of the allegation against the chief minister.

Meanwhile, Swapna had levelled sexual misconduct allegations against former ministers Thomas Isaac, Kadakampally Surendran and former speaker P Sreeramakrishnan. Although the party had granted them permission to move ahead legally, none were ready to do so.

Apparently, the deterrent factor for leaders is that the case will make news and follow ups will lead to more such stories. If MV Govindan proceeds with legal action, then it is likely to improve his political image, but may tighten the situation for other leaders.

It is in this backdrop that the opposition is strongly raising the question of why a defamation suit is not filed by CPM leaders.
