Kochi: Intelligence Bureau (IB) has reported that Swapna Suresh’s statement was leaked by a Customs department officer. The picture of the statement captured on the phone of the investigating officer was leaked through his wife’s phone.
Swapna Suresh’s statement regarding the involvement of Anil Nambiar in the gold smuggling case was leaked. The IB report acquits Assistant Commissioner, N. S. Dev, who was removed from the investigating team after the statement was leaked. Customs Commissioner Sumith Kumar asked IB to conduct an investigation based on the request put forward by N. S. Dev.
The statement of Swapna Suresh was recorded by a three member investigation team of Customs department. The team led by an Assistant Commissioner, included two male officers and one female officer. The IB’s report has been filed against the officer who led the team.
The leaked picture was examined carefully. All details including the phone in which the picture was taken, its IMEI number and how it was transferred can be understood through digital examination.
The officer captured the picture of the statement on the same day Swapna gave her statement. The picture was transferred from his phone to his wife’s phone using Bluetooth. The statement was then leaked through his wife’s phone.
IB has handed over the investigation report to the Customs Commissioner. Action will be taken against the officer based on this report. Commissioner Sumith Kumar is in discussion with central officers of Customs department regarding the action.
The fact that the picture was transferred through Bluetooth and not through WhatsApp or Telegram shows it was well planned. It is also reported that the officer has a pro-Left background. He was part of pro-Left student organisations.
