Kochi: The confidential statement given by gold smuggling accused Swapna Suresh was handed over to Enforcement Directorate (ED). ED will conduct a thorough investigation into the serious allegations levelled by the prime accused. Upon examining the statement, ED will decide whether to question those mentioned by Swapna Suresh.
A year and a half ago, Swapna delivered a confidential statement before customs officials. However, customs refused to examine several claims made by Swapna due to lack of probable evidence.
ED will now examine whether the statement provided to Customs was the same as the one given to them. Following this, ED will likely conduct a more comprehensive investigation and quiz those accused in the case.
Meanwhile, ED will examine whether they can permit the protection demanded by Swapna. Based on the existing law, Swapna is not entitled to protection for being accused in a case registered by ED. However, a decision will be taken after examing her statement to decide whether she could be a key witness or an approver in the case.
