Thiruvananthapuram: The statements by gold smuggling case accused Swapna Suresh and Sarith that Speaker P Sreeramakrishnan handed over a bag to them has resulted in the Customs department deciding to summon the Speaker for interrogation.

The fact that the statement was given by the accused in the gold smuggling case and the bag contained unauthorized dollars increases the gravity of the situation.

As per reports, the head of Kerala Legislative Assembly will have to appear before Customs officials for interrogation. The nature of the interrogation will decide whether he will be listed as an accused in the dollar smuggling case.

A bag containing gold was seized from Thiruvananthapuram airport on July 5, 2020. Following this, the investigation reached Swapna Suresh, who worked as a consulate official, and she was arrested. Meanwhile, the photos and videos of Swapna Suresh with prominent personalities in the government and Kerala politics was leaked.

The video of Swapna Suresh and Speaker Sreeramakrishnan sharing a stage during the inauguration of Car Palace in Thiruvananthapuram was also leaked. The Speaker clarified that he knew Swapna Suresh only as a Consulate official and that he attended the event only because he was persuaded.

Earlier, there were reports suggesting that the Court was stunned to know the names revealed by Swapna Suresh in her confidential statement. That is when allegations against the Speaker gathered steam. Speaker Sreeramakrishnan stated that he did not meet Swapna Suresh in any capacity during foreign trips.
