Kollam: A special task force of the food security department conducted a surprise inspection at an illegal candy-making centre in Karunagappally here.

Officials found that the centre has been using fabric dyes instead of food colours. Over 25 migrant workers are working there. The workers were living in unhygienic conditions. Sewage was seen flowing out from a broken septic tank near the candy manufacturing centre.

The centre has been functioning at Puthiyakavu for the past six months. According to reports, the building owner himself was manufacturing the candy.

The team destroyed around 1000 packets of cotton candy that were to be sold. Authorities have registered a case against the building owner and the 25 workers.
