Suicide of autorickshaw driver: BJP activists protest in front of police station with dead body
Kozhikode: BJP activist carrying the dead body of autorickshaw driver Rajesh, who committed suicide in anguish over an assault by CPM activists, organised a march to the Elathur police station on Sunday evening alleging that the officials were sabotaging the case.
BJP activists took Rajesh’s body from Kozhikode Medical College to the Elathur police station in a procession and organised a protest there. Police arrested and removed the activists.
Local residents and BJP activists alleged that the police were trying to sabotage the case. They said that the police, despite received proof including CCTV visuals of the attack on Rajesh, did not present them in the court.
On Sunday, police arrested two more CPM activist in connection with the case. The men arrested on Sunday were identified as Murali (50) of Elathur and Khadasi of Vellayil. The two arrested on Saturday were Sreelesh (42) and Shaiju (44). Sections including murder has been charged against the arrested. The police had registered a case against 50 people over the incident.
Rajesh (42) a native of Elathur, attempted suicide on September 15 on the road after pouring petrol over him. He sustained burns and was admitted to the Kozhikode Medical College where he died arounf 11.30 pm on Saturday.
During treatment at the hospital, Rajesh gave statement to the Kozhikode magistrate that he attempted suicide due to the mental pain suffered after nearly 10 people manhandled him.
Rajesh was working as mussel plucker. As the daily work in this sector got reduced, he bought an autorickshaw on loan. However, CITU union members at the taxi stand objected him from entering the taxi stand. An argument broke out between them and the CITU members severely thrashed Rajesh.
Rajesh’s relatives said that considering the possibility of a repost-mortem, his body will be cremated at the residence. Rajesh is survived by his wife Rajisha, father Achuthan and mother Gauri.
