Thiruvananthapuram: A suicide attempt took place near the BJP protest venue in front of the secretariat in the wee hours of Thursday. A person identified as Muttada native Venugopal set himself on fire and ran towards the protest venue where BJP leader C. K. Padmanabhan was staging a hunger strike.
The incident took place at 2 am on Thursday. C. K. Padmanabhan and about 70 party workers were present at the protest venue. As stated by the witnesses, Venugopal set himself on fire in front of the Capital Tower opposite to the protest venue and then ran towards the venue.
The police and others reached immediately at the spot and put out the fire. They immediately rushed him to the hospital and the medical college authorities said he sustained about 70 percent burns. More information about the person is yet to be collected.
Meanwhile, BJP alleged that Venugopal is an Ayyappa devotee and that he attempted to commit suicide in protest over the anti-Sabarimala stand taken by the government.
