350 girls lost life in last 4 years over relationship issues

Thiruvananthapuram: In the last 4 years, a total of 350 girls had lost their lives through suicide and murder associated with failure in relationships. Majority of these suicides are associated with love failure, three percent due to murder for rejecting love proposals. In total, 340 girls committed suicide and 10 girls were murdered by their lovers in the last four years.

A total of 80 suicides associated with love failure were registered in 2017, 76 in 2018, 88 in 2019, and 96 in 2020. Three girls were murdered by their lovers in 2017, five in 2019, and two in 2020. Minister Veena George had answered a question regarding this issue in the assembly.

Dr. Unnikrishnan R Nair, a psychiatrist from District Mental Health Programme in Thiruvananthapuram, said that depression, loneliness and other mental problems are the primary reasons that lead to suicide in cases involving relationship failures. The signs of suicide tendency are seen in 15 percent of people who have depression. However, by providing effective counseling and treatment, we can reduce suicide and murder, he added.
