Student’s death due to snakebite: Principal, Vice-principal suspended
Kalpetta: In the incident of the death of Shahla Sherin due to snakebite from classroom, the Principal and Vice-principal of Sarvajana Vocational Higher Secondary School in Bathery were suspended. School Principal A. K. Karunakaran, High School in-charge and Vice-principal K K Mohanan were suspended by the Deputy Direction of Education. An order in this regard has been issued.
It has also been decided to dissolve the school PTA (Parent Teacher Association). General Education Additional Director (Academic) C. A. Santhosh has been entrusted with a departmental probe into the incident.
Since Friday morning, many student organizations have been staging protests demanding action against school authorities and to dissolve PTA.
On Wednesday, around 3.10 pm, Shahla was bitten by a snake which was lying inside a hole on the floor of the classroom. After observing the injury marks on her foot, Shahla informed it to teacher. Following this, the teacher informed her parents. Her father took her to a private hospital on receiving information from the school authority.
Doctors failed to confirm snakebite. Later, she was taken to Bathery Taluk hospital. But even after observation, snakebite was not confirmed. When Shahla started to vomit, Taluk hospital doctor referred her to Kozhikode Medical College. On the way to medical college, she suffered suffocation and was admitted to a private hospital in Chelode. Though snakebite was confirmed, she died.
