Student’s death due to snakebite: Numerous holes in classroom, protest against school
Sulthan Bathery: Students and parents are strong protests are being staged against the school and teachers in connection with the incident of a Class 5 student dying due to snakebite inside the classroom. The deceased, Shahla Sherin (10), was bitten by a snake from the classroom at Bathery Govt. Sarvajana Vocational Higher Secondary School.
Students alleged that even after the student informed of snakebite, teachers didn’t take her to hospital. They waited until her parents arrived. If she was taken to the hospital soon, she could have been saved, they further said.
Reptiles are seen in classroom frequently. But, neither the teachers nor any others have taken any action on this. There are many holes and burrows inside the school building and its premises. Also teachers had banned children from wearing slippers inside the classroom, students further alleged.
On Wednesday, around 3.30 pm, Shahla was bitten by a snake which was lying inside a hole on the wall of the classroom. After observing two injury marks on her foot, Shahla informed the matter to her teacher. Following this, the teacher informed her parents. Her father took her to a private hospital on receiving information from the school authority.
Unfortunately, the doctors at the hospital failed to confirm snakebite. Later, she was taken to Bathery Taluk hospital. But even after observation, snakebite was not confirmed.
When Shahla started to vomit, Taluk hospital doctor referred her to Kozhikode Medical College. On the way to medical college, she suffered suffocation and was admitted to a private hospital in Chelode. Though snakebite was confirmed, the doctors could not save her life.
