Student’s death due to snakebite: Local residents vandalise school staff room
Kalpetta: Local residents vandalised the staff room at Bathery Govt. Sarvajana Vocational Higher Secondary School following the death of a class 5 student of due to snakebite.
Shahla Sherin (10), was bitten by the snake from the classroom and died at a hospital on Wednesday.
Following the incident, police and educational department officials had come to the school. The DDE suspended a teacher of the school and issued a show cause notice to all the other teachers. Following this, the officials left the spot.
Following this, relatives of the deceased student came to the school and this led to emotional scenes inside the premises. This prompted protests from students, parents and local residents.
At one point, local residents gathered at the spot and alleged that some of the teachers were hiding inside the staff room.
They broke open the locked room and vandalised it. They also damaged the equipments in the room. Police came back to the spot and pacified the residents and relatives.
Shahla was bitten by a snake which was lying inside a hole on the wall of the classroom around 3.10 pm. Students had alleged that teachers were reluctant to take the student to hospital, even when there was transport and hospital facilities nearby.
