Kochi: A group of protesters pelted stone at the vehicle of Muthoot Finance Managing Director George Alexander here on Tuesday around 9.30 in the morning. George Alexander sustained minor injuries and window panes of the car were shattered in the stone pelting. He was later admitted to a private hospital here.
After the attack against the Muthoot MD, police force arrived at the spot. Muthoot PRO told media that a group of 20 people attacked them while their vehicle convoy was coming to the office at Banerjee Road. As police protection was arranged only at the office and premises, the people attacked the vehicles. They confirmed that the attackers were not their staff.
There were labour issues in the company for the past few months. Staff of Muthoot were staging a strike raising various demands including salary hike. Trade unions including CITU were protesting against closing down of the branches and terminating and transferring the staff. Trade union leader Elamaram Kareem had made it clear the other day that the strike will not end until the labour issues are resolved.
Following this, the company had approached the court demanding security and obtained an order in favour of them. On Monday, a working staff was reportedly attacked while leaving the office after work. The stone pelting is assumed to be done by the same group. However, the police have not yet confirmed the source of the attack. Meanwhile, trade union leader Anathalavattom Anandan said that labourers would not pelt stones and CITU has no role in the attack.
