Statement misinterpreted; resignation was to uphold ethical values, says Saji Cheriyan in Assembly

Thiruvananthapuram: Saji Cheriyan MLA elucidated his stance in the Kerala Assembly regarding his anti-constitutional remark which sparked controversy. He said that his speech at Mallappally was misinterpreted and he resigned from the ministerial office only to uphold ethical values.

Saji Cheriyan gave an explanation after reading the preface to the constitution. “I have never attempted to insult the constitution. For the past 43 years, I have led my public works by endorsing the values encrypted in the constitution.” said Saji Cheriyan. He also discarded the allegation that he humiliated Ambedkar.

He stated that he resigned after getting approval from the party leadership. Before concluding his statements, Saji Cheriyan expressed his regret once again if anyone got misled by his speech, which erupted controversy.

The rules of procedure and conduct of the Assembly accords permission for a minister to give explanation after resignation. Saji Cheriyan’s statement was as per the rule 64 of the Assembly.
