Alappuzha: State government has announced ration for Blue and White ration cardholders at a subsidised rate after they were overlooked by the central government. Apart from their current share of ration, the state government will declare 10 kg of rice at Rs 15 per kg every month.

The Centre does not provide subsidised ration to Blue and White cardholders as they are not part of the National Food Security scheme. The state used to provide ration for this section of the public at a slightly subsidised rate. Each blue cardholder received Rs 2 kg of rice as their share of ration while White cardholders were given ration based on its availability. A lot of families coming under these categories were eligible to receive free ration.

The state government's announcement benefits around 50 lakh families. Rice bought at the rate of Rs 22 will be distributed at a subsidised rate of Rs 15 per kg. The state will bear the expense in this regard. The government has also extended the distribution of free food kits until April.
