Malapuram: Minister V Abdurahiman will chair a meeting with officials on Monday to discuss matters on land acquisition as part of the development of Kozhikode International Airport. The meeting will be held at the collector's chamber. The emergency meeting was scheduled in the wake of Minister of Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya Scindia's decision to write to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

Earlier, the union minister has stated that the runway of the Kozhikode airport will be reduced unless the state acquires and handover 18.5 acres of levelled land to the central authority for free before March 31,2023. Otherwise, the land needed for building Runway Strip & Runway End Safety Area (RESA) needed to be taken from the existing runway. However, this will limit the runway to be used for landing larger aircraft. The runway will be reduced to 2540 meters from 2860 meters.

The central aviation ministry is of the view that the Karipur airport should have a runway that should have a Runway Strip & Runway End Safety Area (RESA). This is advised to avoid any accidents in the airport which has a tabletop runway.

Meantime, the officials are worried about completing the land acquisition within the time frame given by the aviation ministry.
