Thiruvananthapuram: The government is planning to implement reverse quarantine in the state as soon as the lockdown in the state ends. Under reverse quarantine, senior citizens and people with serious diseases will be isolated. The expert committee appointed by the government also has issued directions in this regard.

The condition of elderly people and those who have serious diseases is likely to worsen if they are affected with COVID-19. Such people who have low immunity are quarantined and protected in reverse quarantine method. During this period, people aged above 60 years and those with serious diseases like heart disease and cancer should remain at home.

Also they should not interact with others in the house and take all necessary precautions. It is figured that there are about 45 lakh senior citizens in the state. Among them, those who have lifestyle diseases will be given special consideration. If more people are affected with COVID-19, a similar type of priority will given for the treatment also.

According to expert opinion, only reverse quarantine is effective until half of the population recovers from COVID-19 and gains immunity or a vaccine or medicine is developed. After discussions, the government will form the guidelines in this regard. Though the decision on lifting lockdown will be taken as per the Centre's directions, reverse quarantine will be imposed as soon as more norms are eased. It is also necessary to maintain the low death toll.
