Thiruvananthapuram: The government has given the nod for making corrections in the name given in SSLC book when the name is changed through gazette notification.
People have the right to change their names through gazette notification. But as per the order released in 1984, the name, religion and caste given in the SSLC book cannot be corrected. Not being able to correct the name on the SSLC book has led to many people missing out on a number of opportunities to study and work abroad and in other states.
Many people approached High Court for not being able to correct the name in the SSLC book even after changing it through gazette notification. Though the verdict came out in support of the petitioners, the government did not carry out the verdict. A contempt of court petition questioning this surfaced then. Following this, the Department of General Education granted a permit to correct the names in SSLC books as well after making corrections in the gazette.
