Thiruvananthapuram: Minister for Social Justice R Bindu informed that a panel of experts will be formed to prepare a protocol for sex reassignment surgery that supports the interests of transgender people.
The minister informed this while responding to the submission by K Shanthakumari that the matter was decided in the Transgender Justice board meeting convened after transgender activist Anannyah’s suicide.
Presently, there is no protocol for sex reassignment surgery in the state. These surgeries are performed in private hospitals. There are no unified laws listed out regarding the treatment methods, expense and standard of treatment.
The committee will also look into the matter of giving expert training for doctors skilled in such surgeries in the government sector. The minister also informed that along with health experts, transgender representatives and a person working for them will also be included in the committee.
