Sriram Venkitaraman’s lapses led to farmer’s suicide in Idukki, relatives raise allegation

The Information Commission also had criticised Sriram for not producing the documents as per the RTI act. At present, Sriram is on suspension in connection with the accident which led to the death of journalist K. M. Basheer.

Thiruvananthapuram: Relatives of an elderly farmer who committed suicide in Idukki alleged that the farmer took his life after his land was grabbed due to the lapses on the part of then Devikulam subcollector Sriram Venkitaraman.

The late farmer K. N. Sivan’s relative K. B. Pradeep stated in a press meet that Sriram and others forged documents to conceal the lapses on his part.

The Information Commission also had criticised Sriram for not producing the documents as per the RTI act. At present, Sriram is on suspension in connection with the accident which led to the death of journalist K. M. Basheer.

After death of farmer Sivan, his relative Pradeep lodged a complaint with the Registration IG and cancelled the fake title deed of the land. Pradeep had also handed over a complaint to the chef minister in this regard.

Kattappana native K. N. Sivan committed suicide in April 2017. His relatives alleged that Sivan took his life after his 2.5-acre land and house were grabbed and the then Devikulam subcollector Sriram Venkitaraman failed to take action. Sivan had visited Sriram in person and lodged a complaint as per senior citizen act. He had visited Sriram’s office several times for this purpose.

According to the documents sought through RTI act, Sivan lodged the complaint on December 28 and Sriram Venkitaraman gave him notice to appear before him on bizarre dates - on November 23 and December 21, the relatives alleged.

The State Information Commission had criticised that Devikulam Revenue Divisional Office was functioning in a totally disordered way as it did not produce documents as per RTI act and also stated the then subcollector Sriram Venkitaraman, who was the main in-charge of the office, was accountable for the same.
