Sreejiv’s case was suicide, not custodial death: CBI
Thiruvananthapuram: The CBI has submitted a report to the CBI court that the incident of custody death of Parassala native Sreejiv was actually a case of suicide.
According to CBI report, Sreejiv’s case was not custody death but a suicide. He had carried poison with him when he was taken into custody. But the police put him in the cell without conducting a body check. Later, he consumed poison and was taken to hospital.
The doctor also stated that he was brought to the hospital after consuming poison. Other witness statements also are recorded. Sreejiv had stayed in a lodge in Attingal in connection with theft cases. A suicide note was found from there, the CBI report pointed out.
Sreejiv died in the custody of Parassala police on May 21, 2014. Though the Police Complaint Authority found that it was a murder case, the crime branch stated it was a suicide. Sreejiv was taken into custody in connection with a theft case and was later hospitalised at medical college after consuming poison. Later, Sreejiv died.
Sreejiv’s brother Sreejith conducted indefinite hunger strike alleging it was custody death and demanded CBI probe into the case. His strike was widely covered by the media.
Sreejith reacted to CBI report that it was a murder conspired by the police officials and doctors. He added that he will continue with the strike in front of the secretariat and will approach the Supreme Court. He also said that the suicide note was prepared by the police.
