New Delhi: Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple Trust has approached the Supreme Court requesting to avoid the temple from the special audit as directed by the court. The trust has also sought the court's intervention stating they do not come under the control of the Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple Governing committee. The need put forward by the Trust will be reviewed by the bench presided by Justice U U Lalit.

The Supreme Court had earlier instructed that the income and expenditure records of the past 25 years of both Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple and Trust must be audited by a trustworthy institution. Based on this, a private company had been assigned the audit works by the Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple Governing committee and advisory committee that were formed last October. The Trust had been asked to submit the income and expenditure records following this. They have now approached the Supreme court against this.

The Trust opines that they are an independent institution. The Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple Trust was formed by Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma in 1965. It was formed to conduct the religious rituals performed in the Travancore royal family temple. They have also made it clear in the request presented before the court that they do not interfere in the day-to-day matters of the temple.

Chitralayam Art Gallery, Kuthira Malika and kalyana mandapams including Sree Vaikundam, Sree Ananthasayanam, Bhajanapura Palace, Mahalakshmi and Sudarshan, that are in the vicinity of Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple, come under the control of the Trust. Amicus curiae Gopal Subramanium had earlier criticized the improper auditing of income and expenditure records in the report presented before the Supreme Court.
