Thiruvananthapuram: A special investigation team has been formed to investigate the disappearance of an engineering student from the Karyavattom campus here. The probe team will investigate the disappearance of Shyam Patmanabhan, a second year M.Tech student of Thiruvananthapuram College of Engineering.
A native of Vadakara in Kozhikode, Shyam had been staying at a flat in Diamond District Valley along with his parents. On Monday evening, Shyam left home telling the parents that he was going to the college library.
However, Shyam did not return. The parents tried to reach Shyam over phone but he was unavailable. The parents and relatives then registered a police complaint. Even when his parents were filing the police complaint, Shyam’s phone was ringing but he was not answering. Police found that Shyam’s last known mobile phone location was the Karyavattom campus.
The officials pressed the dog squad into service and conducted a search inside the college campus. The canines followed Shyam’s scent and stopped near Haimavati pond. However, police said they have not received any evidence to suggest that Shyam entered into the pond.
As such, Shyam could not have been in danger after entering the pond, police said. Searches by police in the bushes and undergrowth around the area did not provide any evidence as to where Shyam went after reaching the pond. The police are yet to recover Shyam’s phone as well.
It is in this situation that the special investigation team has been formed under Kazhakkoottam cyber city assistant commissioner Anil Kumar. Further investigations are on.
