Speaker need not remain apolitical: Sreeramakrishnan
Thiruvananthapuram: The person occupying the Speaker's chair need not remain 'apolitical,' said Speaker P Sreeramakrishnan.
The Kerala Assembly Speaker said this in 'Chodyam Utharam' programme on Mathrubhumi News.
"It is unfair to say that Speakers should disassociate themselves from society. The Speaker should be able to feel the problems and anticipations of society. The prevailing practice needs a complete change," Sreeramakrishnan said.
"The Speaker should not campaign for a particular party. However, there are issues on which one needs to adopt a political stance, such as violation of basic principles of the Constitution. I think the Speaker should take a stance on those issues," he added.
"There is no need of a five-year-long break from political and social life. The idea that the Speaker should remain in a dark room after cutting all relations with society should change. I will make attempts in that regard," Sreeramakrishnan said.
