Thiruvananthapuram: IUML leader M Ummer on Thursday moved the resolution to remove Speaker P Sreeramakrishnan, who is facing allegations in the dollar smuggling case. The resolution also criticized Sreeramakrishnan over his relationship with the gold smuggling case accused and the renovation of the Sankara Narayanan Thampi Members' Lounge for the conduct of the inaugural Loka Kerala Sabha.

Ummer alleged that Speaker failed to uphold the dignity of the Assembly. Speaker himself has accepted his relationship with smuggling accused as a diplomat. Though he had denied the reports and said of filing defamation case, he didn’t. If that was the case, this resolution wouldn’t have been moved, he added.

In between an argument took place between PWD Minister G Sudhakaran and Ummer over the drafting of the resolution. Minister VS Sunil Kumar also joined in and demanded deputy Speaker V Sasi to remove certain phrase from the House documents which the latter said would be considered.

“The Customs had questioned Speaker’s personal assistant to collect more details on the former’s actions and links to smugglers. However, Speaker first tried to obstruct the interrogation. Now media reports state that he himself will be summoned for interrogation. This is an insult to the Kerala Assembly. If it was someone else, they would have barged into Speaker’s dais and vandalized his chair,” Ummer said.

During the tenure of this Assembly, Over Rs 100 crore was spent on the renovation of the Sankara Narayanan Thampi Hall. The work was awarded to ULCCS and it should be inspected whether tender was issued and established procedures were followed. In the second phase, Rs 16 crore was awarded with 30 percent as mobilization fund. A committee was formed to inspect this, after the completion of the works, in 2020. The members of the Assembly were informed of this after all works, he further alleged.

Festival on Democracy was held extravagantly at a time when the state was devastated with two floods and Covid pandemic, Ummer stated.

Ummer also said in the resolution that no Speaker in India had created such a situation or no such allegations were levelled against any of them.
