Speaker criticises ban on campus politics
Thiruvananthapuram: Speaker P Sreeramakrishnan slammed the High Court order banning politics in campuses. He stated that the court has made an illogical order that challenges democracy.
“It should be called as absurd if anyone think they are empowered to take a final decision on everything under the sun. It should not be accepted. In a democratic nation, legislative assemblies and parliament should represent the rule of people," said the speaker.
The Kerala High Court on Friday once again clarified its stand on the issue of banning politics in educational institutions in the State. Stressing that politics cannot be allowed on campuses, the High Court observed that parents send their children to colleges for studying.
The court reiterated its stand while considering the case relating to students’ agitation at MES college in Ponnani.
Many senior political leaders have criticised the High Court order. CPM leader MA Baby has stated that the order is a shameful one.
“It is unfortunate that the court has banned campus politics. Government should intervene in the issue," said VS Achuthanandan.
Congress leader VM Sudheeran noted that politics is mandatory in campuses.
Various students’ unions have protested against the High Court order.
