Kannur: The Southern Railways have decided to reinstate de-reserved coaches in 24 daily trains including 20 trains running through Kerala. The de-reserved coaches will be operational from October. The move comes after a 30-month break due to the Covid-19 situation.

During the pre-COVID period, 21 trains were operated in Kerala with de-reserved coaches. However, de-reserved coaches in two major trains were discontinued. Four de-reserved coaches in train number 13352 / Alappuzha-Dhanbad Express were discontinued.

Similarly, among the two de-reserved coaches in number 12624 / Thiruvananthapuram-Chennai Mail, one was slashed. Apart from this, Chennai Central-Mangalore Central West Coast Express has no reservation coach.

De-reserved coaches (a specific section of coaches converted as unreserved between a set of specific stations) are introduced to reduce the crowding in general or unreserved coaches. The tickets can be taken from the station itself. The ticket rate of these coaches is lower than the sleeper class.
