Chennai: The railways has decided to resume unreserved general coaches in trains. The general coaches were conducting service with fully reserved seats to reduce overcrowding during the pandemic. From November 1, unreserved coaches will be reinstated on 23 trains under the Southern Railway. As the educational institutions are reopening, this will be a comforting decision. The Railway Board has decided to reinstate general coaches in six more trains from November 10.

Express and mail trains will continue to charge the same fare as before the pandemic. Other express and mail trains also will get general coaches later. Only a handful of trains, including the MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit), currently have unreserved coaches. There was widespread objection over not resuming unreserved coaches despite the decline in Covid cases.
