Mavelikkara: Police have nabbed four including a Supplyco official for smuggling Public Distribution System (PDS) items from Thattarambalam here in Alappuzha . The four arrested are procurement centre senior assistant (grade 2) Raju, ration dealer Santhosh Varghese, mini lorry driver Vikhil and another person named Joseph Sugu. The police intervention was based on the official assigned for overlooking activities at the procurement centre.
The centre is the place where PDS items are stocked for the supply in ration shops under Chengannur taluk. The incident took place on December 10. As many as 40 sacks of rice and 20 sacks of wheat were taken without proper documentation when the official overlooking the centre went outside. The incident came to light as police retrieved CCTV visuals at the centre over the overseeing official’s complaint.
The items were transported in a mini lorry. The four later came to know about the overseeing official’s move and to cover up the matter they delivered the items at various ration shops on Sunday. The ration dealers were not initially ready to accept the delivery without bills and that too on a non-working day. The four convinced them that they will give the bills by Monday morning, for which the ration dealers agreed to.
However, the police had accurate inputs and they nabbed the four. They found the sacks from the ration shops and also seized the vehicle used for smuggling. While it also came to light that the entity who took the contract for transportation of supply forged documents and violated mandates.
Meanwhile, vigilance of the Supplyco has been examining the stock at the centre. It is learnt that the scale of malpractice is expected to widen.
