Sky clears up; Water flow into dam slows down
Cheruthoni: As rain in the catchment areas of Idukki dam has decreased, the strength of water flow into the reservoir has been reduced. Only a slight increase was marked in the water level. The power production in Moolamattam power house is in its maximum capacity.
The electricity department has decided that the shutters of the dam need not be opened before the water level reaching 2400 feet as the rainfall has decreased. The maximum storage capacity of the dam is 2408.5 feet.
Normally, the shutters are opened when the water level reaches 2403 feet. The experts opine that it can be raised by one more feet. The rest of the 5 feet is for storing the water flowing in after shutters of Mullaperiyar dam are opened.
Even if a flood hit the catchment area, the water can be stored in this manner. Normally, Idukki dam is filled in the Malayalam month of Thulam which falls in October-November. This year, the dam has nearly reached its maximum capacity during southwest monsoon.
The dam was constructed in a way that can store water two more feet even after the water level reaches 2403 feet during monsoon. The electricity board officers oppose the move to open the shutters before reaching 2400 feet without trusting the construction of the dam.
