Sivasankar could be the kingpin of gold smuggling, ED informs HC
Kochi: The Enforcement Directorate has informed the High Court that former IT secretary M Sivasankar could be the kingpin of the gold smuggling case. They noted that Swapna was just the face of the deal.
“Swapna was completely controlled by Sivasankar. He took advantage of all the deals,” said ED before the HC.
Additional Solicitor General SV Raju has informed the Court that ED made the observations considering Sivasankar’s post during the time of gold smuggling.
These matters were revealed in the detailed argument on the anticipatory bail plea submitted by Sivasankar. The IAS official moved the petition after examining chances of arrest from ED and Customs in the gold smuggling case.
After two hours of long argument, justice Ashok Menon deferred the petition to October 28. The court also stayed Sivasankar’s arrest till this date.
Senior lawyer K Ramkumar who appeared for Customs argued that financial offence is a crime against the society. At the same time, Customs criticised Sivasankar for not cooperating with the probe.
Adv P Vijayabhanu, lawyer of Sivasankar, argued that allegations which are not mentioned in the report submitted by ED are being raised against the IAS official.
At present, Sivasankar has been cornered in the situation as he would not be able to get a hotel room or medical care at a hospital. He is not a computer to remember everything that took place in 2018. He is always ready to cooperate with the probe, Sivasankar’s lawyer informed the court.
