'Sir, we killed children, we are also leaving': Murder-suicide incident shocks Kannur

Kannur: The police are conducting a detailed investigation into the incident in which five people, including three children, were found dead inside a house in Padiyottuchal here. According to the post-mortem report, chemicals were found in all three children. The initial conclusion was that it might be a sleeping pill. It is believed that the children were killed after giving them sleeping pills. But it has been decided to examine the internal organs to find out whether the substance found in the body was poisonous.

Shaji (42), his wife Sreeja (38), Sreeja's children Sooraj (12), Sujin (8) and Surabhi (6) of Mulappra house at Vachal were found dead on Wednesday. Shaji and Sreeja were found hanging from a fan inside the room. The dead bodies of the children were found hanging from the stairs.

It is suspected that Sooraj, the eldest child, was hung alive. Bruises found on his body are suspected to be from a scuffle when the couple tried to overpower him.

'Sir, we killed children, we are also leaving'

Civil police officer K Sahadevan of Cherupuzha police station answered the call at 6 am. A woman told him from the other side, 'Sir, we killed our children, we are also leaving'.

Upon collecting details, the police informed the Vachal natives. Without wasting time, sub-inspector MP Shaji and his team rushed to the spot. However, they had already died by the time they reached the house.

Later, a doctor arrived and confirmed the death. A large number of locals and top police officers reached the scene. Kannur rural police chief M Hemalatha, Payyannur DySP KE Premachandran, inspector Santosh Kumar, MLA TI Madhusoodanan and others were present.

Fingerprint experts, a dog squad and a scientific examination team inspected the building.

Family issues

Shaji was Sreeja’s second husband. Their marriage was officiated on May 16. Trouble started when Shaji and Sreeja started living together. Sreeja’s former husband Sunil filed a police complaint against them. The three children killed by the couple were from Sreeja's first marriage. Sreeja is from Anikkadi in Cheruvathur.

Shaji has another wife and two children. His wife Geetha also filed a complaint seeking custody of their children.

Natives said that the children were active in the festivities at school and in their communities. They are shocked that the couple killed them before taking their own lives.
