Sikkim truck mishap: Mortal remains of soldier brought home in Palakkad


Palakkad: The mortal remains of the Keralite soldier, Vaishaq (26), who died in a truck mishap at Sikkim, were brought to his house in Palakkad on Sunday. The body was brought to his house in Chenganiyur Kavu by road from Coimbatore and was received by minister MB Rajesh and others at the Walayar check post.

People can pay public homage at Chungamannam Govt School from 8 AM onwards. The funeral will be held later on Monday at Ivormadom in Thiruvilwamala.

As many as 16 Indian Army personnel lost their lives on Friday in a road accident in North Sikkim involving an Army truck said the Indian Army.

Vaishaq joined army in 2015 and last visited home in July to attend his son's birthday celebration.

According to the Indian Army, the ill-fated vehicle was part of a three-vehicle convoy from Chatten towards Thangu. En route to Zema, the car skidded down a steep slope while negotiating a sharp turn.

The Indian Army launched a rescue operation in which four injured soldiers were air evacuated, while three Junior Commissioned Officers and 13 soldiers succumbed to the injuries sustained in the accident.
