New Delhi: MP Shashi Tharoor criticised the central government's move to cut Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme in order to overcome the financial crisis due to COVID-19 outbreak. Shashi Tharoor used his MP fund for purchasing 1000 rapid test kits and 1000 PPE kits and brought them to Thiruvananthapuram.
Tharoor tweeted that the remaining 1000 rapid test kits will be brought by Wednesday and 7500 PPE kits next week. He added that he could use the MP fund effectively before the central government stopped it.
The MP also welcomed the decision to curb the salary and pension of the MPs. He said that it will be an act of solidarity to the people who are going through a tough time. He further said that changing the local area development fund of MPs to a unified fund will lead to problems.
Tharoor also reminded that allocating fund to the 563 constituencies will be based on priorities and cited the example of Kerala being granted only Rs 157 crore even after many COVID positive cases were reported here. He asked if the imbalance would also affect reallocation of MP funds.
