New Delhi: Shashi Tharoor on Saturday collected the nomination paper for the Congress presidential polls form the AICC office here through a representative, reported national media houses.
The aspirants can file papers till September 30. The election is scheduled in October.
Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot has announced that he will be in the fray since no one from the Gandhi family is running for the post. Earlier, interim president Sonia Gandhi had requested Gehlot to contest in the poll for the party chief. However, he insisted that Rahul Gandhi must come back. Rahul, who is busy with the Bharat Jodo Yatra declared that he will not contest.
Tharoor is the first leader to collect the papers. He is part of the 'G 23' leaders who demanded internal democracy in the organisation. However, it is not clear if he will be the only person from the rebel leaders who will be contesting. Tharoor had met Sonia and sought her permission to run for the post. It is reported that he will be inducted to the top body, the working committee even if he loses the poll. Sonia has also told Tharoor that it will be a ‘fair election’ and there will not be an official candidate.
