Thrissur: Politics has an indispensable part to play in the life of a Malayali and adhering to the popular belief, a youngster from Thrissur is seeking a referendum in local body elections to be held in Portugal. Raghunath Kadavannur, a native of Thrissur, is contesting in the Vermelha local body elections in Portugal as the candidate of the Communist Party of Portugal.

Raghunath has been working in Portugal for the last 11 years and was a former SFI worker in Kerala. However, he did not quit party activities even after arriving in Portugal and became active in the Communist Party of Portugal.

“There has been a lot of rumours spreading that the people of Portugal are losing their jobs because of immigrants from other countries. Other parties are spearheading such a campaign and it is necessary to prevent it,” Raghunath said.

In the elections, all other parties are competing alone. But his communist party and an environmental party are jointly contesting under the name CDU to gain a foothold in the political system of the country. Raghunath also pointed out that the party system in Portugal is not like the party system that we follow today.
