SFI workers manhandle two police officers in public in TVM
Thiruvananthapuram: A group of SFI workers brutally manhandled police officers in public after they blocked a bike for violating traffic signal. Vinayachandran and Sarath, police officers at SAP police camp, were beaten up near the Palayam war memorial on Wednesday at 6 pm.
About 20 SFI workers surrounded the police officers in uniform and manhandled them with the public looking as mute spectators. Both officers were hospitalised at the general hospital with serious injuries. It took a while for more police force to arrive at the spot and the traffic was disrupted for about half an hour.
Earlier in the day, traffic police officer Amal Krishna blocked a bike which took ‘U’ turn violating signal near the memorial. The man riding the bike was provoked by this and pushed the officer backwards. Watching this, Vinayachandran and Sarath interfered which resulted in a clash with the bike rider.
Meanwhile, the man contacted his friends on phone and a group of 20 students arrived from near University College premises and attacked the police officers. Traffic police officer Amal Krishna managed to escape and sought help from the control room. However, the cops were brutally beaten up by the time the police force arrived.
The police nabbed the attackers but SFI leaders tried to block the police from taking them into custody. As more students gathered on the spot, the police were compelled to let them go. The injured police officers were taken to general hospital in another jeep.
SFI district president Shijith said that SFI workers have no connection with the attack on the cops. Some students of the University College are involved in the incident, but there were no SFI workers among them, he said.
Deputy Police Commissioner R. Adithya said that they will examine the CCTV camera visuals at the location. Searching for the bike of attackers has begun. However, none of the higher officials responded on the escape of the attackers.
