Malappuram: Police arrested seven individuals including SFI unit secretary and KSU unit president in connection with the inverter battery theft at Government College here.
The arrested individuals are Thalassery native Victor Johnson (SFI unit secretary), Areekode native Atheef (KSU unit president), Nanminda native Adarsh Ravi, Pullara native Niranj Lal Manjeri native (SFI activists), Pandalur native Shalin Sasidharan and Pandikkad native Jibin.
The accused were nabbed over the police complaint lodged by the principal of the college on Monday. The theft came to light during the internal auditing in the college. According to the complaint, 11 inverter batteries were stolen from Islamic, history, Urdu and Chemistry sections of the college.
Police after questioning the security person and other individuals found that the theft happened on June 27, June 30 and July 2. The officials later identified the persons behind the act. The cops are also investigating whether more are involved. The arrested were produced before the court and remanded.
Meanwhile, the officials also informed that the accused sold the stolen batteries at Munduparamba and Kavungal regions and spent the entire money.
All batteries except a few were non-operational. They cost around Rs 1 lakh and were sold at rates ranging from Rs 1,500 to Rs 3,000.
SFI and KSU have ousted the accused members, said reports.
