Poonjar: Former MLA PC George-led Kerala Janapaksham (Secular) tasted yet another electoral defeat in a bypoll at Perunilam (ward number 1). Janapaksham not only lost its sitting seat but also finished third. The party does not have a single representative in the panchayat either. Interestingly, this is despite the support from BJP. CPM won the seat in the ward.
The bypoll was necessitated by the resignation of ward member Shelmy Renny. The ward witnessed a triangular contest. The CPM candidate defeated the Congress candidate by a margin of 12 votes.
Out of the total polled votes, CPM got 264 votes, Congress 252 and Janapaksham 239. In the 13-ward panchayat, CPM now has 7 seats, Congress 5 and Kerala Congress 1.
It may be noted that George tasted electoral defeat during his one-man army pursuit in his political career and has been projecting himself as a person who strives for addressing the issues faced by the Christians. George is also in the limelight for legitimizing Hindutva spins targeting minorities which also got momentum in some Christian fundamentalist groups. He has swapped his political affiliation multiple times and is now supporting BJP.
