Thiruvananthapuram: Senior politician and Congress leader Thalekunnil Basheer passed away aged 79. He was undergoing treatment for more than five years following a heart attack. He breathed his last at his residence in Vembayam here at around 4.20 am on Friday.
Basheer entered the field of politics through KSU and found a remarkable spot in Kerala’s politics. He was an important figure of the KPCC till 2016 but later retired due to his illness.
He was born in 1945 in the village of Thalekunnu near Venjarammoodu in Thiruvananthapuram. Basheer gave more importance to value-based politics and was a close confidant of senior Congress leader AK Antony.
Basheer first joined the Assembly in 1977 from Kazhakoottam and later resigned for AK Antony to contest. He became a member of the Lok Sabha from Chirayankeezhu twice (1984, 1989).
Basheer was a member of the Rajya Sabha twice before that. He was the DCC President of Thiruvananthapuram from 1980 to 1989. He was also a member of the Executive Committee of the KPCC from 1972 to 2015.
