Kochi: In an important development to the broad daylight self-killing of a youngster preceded by an attack on his friend here on Monday, police have recorded the statement of the victim. The statement of the man who was attacked hinted that the deceased youth's frustration over a broken friendship led to the incident. The incident took place at a juncture when Kerala has been witnessing rampant mishaps, attacks and killings over jilted relationships.

Thoppumpady native Christopher D’Cruz, a techie had committed suicide in public after attacking his friend Sachin with a knife. Earlier reports were only about self-killing and later only it came to light that the act was preceded by an attack on his friend.

D’Cruz committed suicide by slitting his throat and arms on the footpath at Deshabhimani junction and succumbed to the injuries after attacking Sachin with a knife on his throat. The attack on Sachin came to light late as he was unable to speak due to a neck injury. He had suture in his neck and could not converse with the police officials.

The police took the statement as his condition improved. According to the statement, both got to know each other through Facebook and had been friends for a year. For the last few days, they were not on good terms and stopped interacting through Facebook and WhatsApp.

Later D’Cruz sent a message to Sachin for meeting him in person and resolve the issue between them. Following this, the duo met at Kochi. D’Cruz reportedly urged Sachin to continue in friendship, which the latter rejected.

Following this, D’Cruz took the chilly powder kept in his bag and threw it on Sachin’s eyes. After that D’Cruz took a knife and slashed Sachin’s throat.

Meanwhile, police have confirmed that D’Cruz’s death was suicide. The police have already retrieved CCTV visuals to know more about the matter. It is learnt that the probe team will take statements from the kin of both parties and is expected to close the case. Also, Sachin who was hospitalized has been discharged.
