Thiruvananthapuram: The Supreme Court of India decided to stay proceedings in sedition cases until the review on matter by the union government and the ripples of the same will be felt in the state.

At present, 41 individuals are booked under sedition charges in Kerala.

Data shows in most cases sedition is slapped on those individuals who are being charged under other cases. In the 41 cases that are live, 40 of them have been charged with UAPA too. While in one case, a college student has been exclusively charged under sedition.

Sedition has been evoked in the districts where there is presence of Maoists.

In Wayanad district, the number of individuals booked for sedition is 23. The numbers in Kannur, Kozhikode and Malappuram are six, five and four respectively. While in Palakkad, Thrissur and Ernakulam there are one case each.

Most cases are in the trial stage.

As UAPA and other charges have been evoked in most cases, the review on sedition will only give an individual a chance to get bail from that section only. As a result, the case as such will not drop.
