Second Nipah outbreak reported; Take precaution; Use N-95 masks
With the second Nipah virus outbreak confirmed in Kochi, the questions regarding the precautionary measures are more than relevant. Though the virus is said to be not air-borne, it is better to wear a mask to prevent it from entering the respiratory system of human body.
The best option to resist Nipah virus is to use N-95 masks or N-95 respirator masks instead of surgical masks. N-95 masks have three layers and can filter upto 95 percent micro particles in the air. N-95 is an efficiency rating by the government agencies to indicate that it filters about 95% airborne particles which are 0.3 microns in size or below.
The N-95 masks can be used upto 7 days normally because it will lose 50% of its efficiency after the time. Once the mask is contaminated, user have to replace it with a new one to get better protection. Compared to surgical masks, N-95 masks are thicker with three layers. The doctors and experts recommend to wear this type of mask.
