Palakkad: The Transport Department has initiated proceedings to change the position of seats, allotted to senior citizens in private buses. An order in this regard will be issued soon.

The move comes in the wake of a complaint lodged with Transport Minister Antony Raju seeking to change the seat position.

At present, the senior citizen’s seat is located above the rear left wheel in a majority of private buses running in the state. It is the second seat in front of the back door.

However, the presence of a semi-circular-shaped steel casing towards the seat causes discomfort for the elderly while sitting and getting up. There are possibilities of passengers slipping and falling.

Over the issue, P Subramaniyan, a native of Palakkad, lodged a complaint with the transport minister in October 2022. He received a response to the complaint on April 13 stating that the transport commissioner has been instructed to take a decision over the matter.

Following this, the transport department has begun efforts to change the position of the seats.
